News Flash: Sunday is always coming

March 20, 2012

I was having a conversation with a local professional last week. He asked me how my week was going. I told him that it was a normal week with my usual weekly rhythms. He asked me to explain what I meant by weekly rhythms.

Sunday is always coming.

That was my simple answer.

No matter what else is added to my schedule; there are things I do every week because Sunday is coming.

1. I pray and study for the right word for the right people. God knows who will be in attendance, and He knows the message they need to hear. It’s my job to get on God’s page and speak what He wants to say. This takes awhile. Sometimes I don’t get a feel for His will until late Saturday, or early Sunday. When I finally settle on His direction, usually the message comes together quickly.

2. I meet with my staff pastors. We talk about last Sunday’s service.

  • What worked?
  • What didn’t?
  • Why?
  • What can we do differently?
  • What should we never do again?

This is the hits and misses discussion.

  • What can we do next Sunday?
  • Who needs training?
  • Who needs resources?

We never want to quit asking why, and why not?

There are a couple of equations that we use during this discussion.

  • What is = Delegation.
  • What if = Investigation.

Resources are allocated to the right teams. Training is scheduled. Wins are celebrated. And hopefully next Sunday, everything will flow better.

3. I ask friends what they are preaching. I like to see what God is doing in churches other than my local church. I think this gives me a big picture perspective.

4. I invite people to our service. I want people to know that Jesus loves them. I want to help them get connected.

Sunday is always coming.

Pastors and staff need to remember this. So does every other believer.

What weekly rhythms do you have, simply because Sunday is coming?
