Every emerging disciple has 3 minimum elements in their journey with Jesus. These are absolutely essential to a disciple’s growth.
1. Believing. Every one of us must have faith towards Jesus Christ. It cannot be faith in faith, or faith in a church, it must be faith in Jesus.
Acts 16:31 – And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
Faith towards God will ultimately result in your salvation. This is a faith that cannot be replaced nor can it be diminished. Once you are saved you must continue to exercise faith in Jesus Christ as your personal savior. This faith must be based on His work not yours. His doing made your being possible.
2. Belonging. Disciples must be joined together with other disciples in community. Commit yourself to a group of believers that you worship with and serve with. Your addition to a local church will place responsibility on your shoulders to make that group of individuals stronger and more vibrant simply because you are now a part of them. Pray for them. Love them. Care for them. Grow with them.
Ephesians 2:19 – Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God.
3. Becoming. You are now in a process of becoming like Jesus. As you continue to believe and belong, you grow yourself up through prayer, bible intake, and the honing of your spiritual gift. This emergence must never stop. Whether you have been in church for 25 years or 25 days, Jesus is looking for growth. Growth is change. Change is what leads to challenge. Challenge is what leads to strength.
Romans 8:29 – For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
