I can’t blame Thomas. He wasn’t the only doubter, but he was the only one honest enough to say he had doubts. Contrary to cultural pressures, honesty generally will get you an audience with Jesus. Try it some time. Jesus isn’t afraid of, nor ashamed of, our raw humanity.
Thomas said that he wouldn’t believe unless he saw Jesus in the flesh. Jesus accommodated this request and showed up. We would probably see Jesus much more if we requested an audience with Him.
Jesus initiated contact with Thomas. He told Thomas to not just touch Him, but to actually put his hands in His side. Jesus knew surface contact wouldn’t help Thomas’ faith. But if Thomas would go deeper, his faith would immediately be increased.
What a lesson for us. If your faith is lacking, don’t pursue surface contact with Jesus; go deeper.
1. Go deeper in the Word.
Romans 10:17 – So then Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.
2. Go deeper in prayer.
Jude 20 – But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.
3. Go deeper in action.
Mark 16:17 – And these signs shall follow them…
Matthew 28:19 – Go ye therefore…
4. Go deeper in relationships.
II Thessalonians 1:3 – We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth.
